Cell phones provide a very efficient way to communicate with friends, families and associates, but they can also have an affect on health when they are used excessively. Cell-phone usage has grown over recent years, and a recent American study shows about 91% of American adults and 60% of teens own a cell-phone, and it how it has revolutionized communication in the 21st century. It doesn’t really matter what kind of phone you use, you will always look forward to messages and calls. With the increasing rate of mobile phones usage in this century, we should be more concerned about it’s health risks. Below are some side effects of cell phones on the health of the human body.
1. It hinders sleep
Individuals with smart-phones are more likely to sleep for lesser hours each night, which is especially common among teenagers and youths. When your sleep is hindered and you aren’t able to catch up with the recommended 6 to 9 hours of daily sleep, it can negatively affect your health. Sleep deprivation has been shown to lead to a higher risks of certain health defects like high blood pressure and heart failure.
2. Disease carriers
The cleanliness of our cell phones is not something that many of us would think about, and studies have shown that cell phones could be as dirty as public toilet seats. This is because you take it along with you wherever you go; it slides into your pocket, your purse, and even after contacting something dirty with your palms, you can easily pick up your phone again. The heat generated by the phone even makes it a safe place for bacteria to breed.
3. They increase stress levels
Imagine if there were no cell phones? There would be no constant ringing, vibrating, alerts, or even the need to check for online updates. With all these things in place in our daily lives, stress levels are significantly increased. A study shows that there is a link between the psychosocial aspects of cell phone usage and mental health symptoms in young adults. From this study, researchers found out that women had stress and sleep disturbances with high mobile phone use, while men had sleep disturbances and symptoms of depression.
Cell phones are low-powered radio-frequency transmitters, and to avoid this from affecting you, it’s best to reduce how much you use them. Disinfect your phone to avoid infecting yourself, try to keep the phone a bit far from you if you won’t be using it at the moment. Also use speakers when you’re at home and save your ears the loud noise from your ear piece. You should also try to interact more with people face-to-face and reduce text messaging, if you can.
