Acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), is a long term condition where the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) doesn’t close all the way or opens too often. This makes the acid produced by the stomach move up into the esophagus. Common symptoms of this problem include, a burning sensation in the chest known as heartburn, difficulty in swallow, dry cough, hoarseness or soreness of th throat, and regurgitation of food or sour liquid. These symptoms often last up to 2 hours or more and heartburn is usually worsens after eating or when bending down.
Some risk factors of acid reflux include: cancer, tooth decay, ulcers and some other serious health issues. Below are some foods that can fight acid reflux.
1. Green beans
Green beans are a great source of fiber and protein and are also known to be low-acid foods. Studies have found that foods and drinks with an alkaline pH can help to neutralize stomach acid and also reduce the symptoms. Green beans are also a good source of vitamins A, C, K, B6 and folic acid , and contain some trace elements.
2. Almond milk
Almond milk contains alkaline properties and is a good way to soothe an acidic stomach. It also soothes the burn in the belly and throat within a short period and also help to increase satiety, to avoid over-productivity of acid. This milk is low in fat but high in energy, proteins, lipids and fiber. It also contains minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and zinc.
3. Salmon
Salmon is one of the best seafoods that is rich in omega-3 fatty acid. It is also a great source of vitamin B6, B12 and D, selenium, choline, pantothenic acid, biotin and potassium. Its slow digestibility makes it a great choice for acid reflux sufferers and doesn’t increase the body’s acid production unlike other fattier protein sources. The omega-3 in it also gives its anti-inflammatory effects, reducing the risk of heartburn.
4. Sweet potatoes
Sweet potatoes are a good source of dietary fiber and also contain some vitamins. They are digested slowly, which makes them a great meal for acid reflux, as they soak up some of the acid in the stomach to keep it from rising up to the chest.
5. Cucumbers
Cucumbers contain a lot of water, which makes them a great option to keep the body hydrated. They are also known for their alkaline properties, which can keep acid reflux symptoms under control. The high water content can keep you full for a longer period of time and make your body less likely to overproduce acid. Cucumbers have also been shown to reduce the risk of cancer, supply skin-friendly minerals like magnesium and potassium, and also aid in weight loss.
