What are the Known Causes of Tonsillitis (Tonsil Inflammation)?

Tonsillitis is an extremely painful experience, my girlfriend has twice now suffered from this and I can see the degree of agony she went through. So what is Tonsillitis? – This is a medical condition in which there is an inflammation of the tonsils.

The tonsils are the “two lymph nodes located on each side of the back of your throat”.  Some of the known symptoms of this condition range from severe sore throat that results in a pain when swallowing, headaches, stiff-neck and off course the swelling of the lymph nodes.

There have been extensive research on this subject matter and some of the known causes of this condition shall be highlighted below.

1. Bacterial/Viral Infection

The most common cause of tonsillitis is bacterial and viral infection. One known virus that can cause this condition is the Epstein – Barr virus, a known bacteria that can also cause this condition is the Streptococcus (strep) bacteria. As in all bacterial/viral sickness, tonsillitis is contagious and spreads from one individual to another.

2. Secondary Illness

Health experts have observed that certain secondary illness can also be a catalyst for tonsillitis. Common secondary infections such as severe fever, common cold, respiratory tract infections, untreated sore throat; untreated bad breathe and severe cough may result in tonsil inflammation.

3. Injury from External Object

Another potential cause of tonsillitis is injury caused by an external object. Foreign objects such as toothbrush or metallic instruments inserted into the respiratory tract during a mouth surgery and not properly controlled while in the mouth may also have contact with the tonsil and cause inflammation.

4. Allergies

Food allergies are also a pointer to the causes of tonsillitis, the human body reacts differently to certain food substances. So it is usually advised to know your allergies and keep-off them, because such allergies may cause your tonsils to react negatively.

5. Dust/Hard Perfume

Health Specialists have also suggested that certain substances that enter through the respiratory tract can also cause a reaction in the tonsils. One of this substances is uncontrolled dust, Health experts have also been led to reasonably suggest that certain uncommon hard chemicals may also create an adverse effect on the tonsils.

In conclusion, It is important to note that the tonsils are “the first line of defense against pathogens” so it is a very crucial component of the immune system, it is better treated at its earlier stages, it can be treated with antibiotic or a tonsillectomy.
