5 Natural Remedies to Help with a Sore Throat

I hate it when ever I have sore throat as it is painful and indicative of having cold in most cases. I always go for one of the natural remedies as soon as possible to get some relief. Most of the time it does help.

Different things can lead to a sore throat, ranging from a side effect of strained vocal voice, to the first sign of a cold, or an irritation, or even an indication of something more serious.

You can’t help but feel the hurt, and this can lead to lack of appetite, and make you malnourished, since swallowing won’t be easy. If you have a sore throat, your first concern should be how to relief or get rid of it as soon as you can.

Below are some ways to soothe a sore throat naturally.

1. Gargle with warm salt water

Gargling with warm salt water may seem like an old lifestyle, but it definitely works.  The soreness is usually as a result of inflamed and swollen cells in the mucous membranes. A warm salty water will help to decrease the swelling. The salt helps to suck out water from the swollen cells  which ends up relieving you of the pain.

2. Suck on garlic

Garlic contains allicin, a compound known to kill the bacteria that causes strep and also fight the germs that cause pain and irritation. Its smell may be repulsive, but you may want to give it a try at night before going to bed, since you’ll probably not be out with friends that night.

3. Honey

Honey is a very common household treatment for sore throat; you can take it straight up that way or mix it in a tea. Studies have shown it to be very effective in healing wounds, and sore throats are not exempted.

4. Hydrogen peroxide

It’s no longer news that hydrogen peroxide is used in wound healing, to avoid infection. Interestingly, it also works effectively to soothe sore throats. Ensure you dilute your hydrogen peroxide, preferably with warm water, before gargling; you can also add honey if the smell repels you. Spit out the water thereafter.

5. Marshmallow root

Marshmallow root contains mucilage, a mucus like substance that helps to coat and soothe mucus membranes in the throat. Add a tablespoon of dried root in a mug and pour boiling water over it; cover for about 30 to 60 minutes, then strain and drink.
