Nausea is a queasy feeling that you can notice around your abdominal region. Nausea is not an illness in itself, but it can be an significant symptom of several other health conditions such as food poisoning, appendicitis, cardiovascular problems and certain forms of cancer. Also, in the first 3 months of pregnancy, nausea can occur. It is referred to as morning sickness in this case. These tips might be helpful the next time you feel nauseous.
1. Change your posture
Sometimes, nausea can be caused by poor circulation through your body. Try to find a quiet, dark room. Lie down flat on your back, with your head level with your body and not on a pillow. Then, bend your knees. You can also sit with your back against a wall or on any other vertical surface, then push your knees up and put your head between them. Remember to breathe.
2. Cool compress
An ice pack that has been out of the refrigerator for a little while or a towel soaked in water can act as a cool compress to help relieve nausea. Place it at the back of your neck. This might be helpful if the cause of the nausea is psychological.
3. Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a form of healing that involves the use of essential oils. Lemon oil and peppermint oil act on the area of nausea control in the medulla to suppress the feelings of nausea. The smell of citrus can reduce the feelings of nausea and relax your stomach muscles. Peppermint is contraindicated in asthmatic patients and people suffering from GERD.
4. Ginger
Ginger is a very effective for treatment of different digestive issues, including nausea. It also stimulates the action of lipase and other digestive enzymes which all function to neutralize gastric acid. Phenols contained in ginger also have a laxative effect. You should take fresh ginger or ginger tea. Avoid taking ginger ale because it doesn’t contain enough ginger to help with nausea. It also contains a lot of sugar, which you shouldn’t take if you feel nauseous. Remember, you shouldn’t give ginger to children less than a year old.
Remember that you should identify the underlying cause of your nausea first before trying to control it. This is because the different conditions that induce nausea require different methods of treatment.
