Physical fitness refers to your general state of health, well being and your ability to perform various types of physical activities. Virtually everyone of us has an idea of what it means to be fit, but where some of us miss it is the fact that fitness is not only about the physical appearance. A lot of components contribute to your being physical fit. Your level of fitness is determined by the combination of your daily physical activity, exercise and diet.
Below are some of the components of physical fitness.
Agility is a skill-related component of physical fitness that enables you to move quickly and easily. It is usually tested by timing individuals while they run through a series of obstacles for a specific distance and a perfect example for this is a football player cutting across the field. An individual’s agility can be increased by doing specific footwork drills on an agility ladder or on some other obstacle course that will require you to adjust your body as quickly as possible.
2. Muscular strength
Muscular strength helps to keep the body strong and enables you to lift heavy weights. It can be increased by consistent training with heavy weights, in the 4-6 or 12-15 rep ranges. Your number of reps should however, be fewer as the weight increases.
Balance is ones ability to control movements either standing or while moving. You can easily test your current level of balance by standing on one leg with your eyes closed for about 30 seconds on each leg. You can improve your balance by working on your core strength, by specific training techniques like standing on a leg while you perform an exercise, or by making use of equipment like Fit-Balls, balance discs and so on.
4. Cardiovascular endurance
This is the body’s ability to keep up with a physical activity for long periods of time. Cardio exercises like running, jogging, cycling and so on, work on the cardiovascular system which comprises of the heart, lungs and blood vessels. The ability to keep the cardiovascular system active for extended periods of time defines cardiovascular endurance.
No matter your current level of fitness, you can always work on and improve on any component by using the appropriate drills and techniques.
